Federal Laboratory Consortium Enters into Partnership with Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation

(WASHINGTON, DC – November 30, 2021) The Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) has entered into a strategic partnership with Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation (LACDC), based in Los Alamos, New Mexico, as part of an ongoing campaign to help entrepreneurs and small businesses succeed through collaborations with federal laboratories.

LACDC is a private not-for-profit organization that has been active in Los Alamos since 1983. The goal of the LACDC is economic development by providing resources and assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs. LACDC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the FLC on November 12, 2021.

Under the agreement, the FLC and LACDC will jointly encourage partnerships between federal laboratories and industry, especially small businesses, to help move technologies out of the lab and into the marketplace – a vital process known as technology transfer. These public-private partnerships will support new innovations, leading to job creation and economic benefits.

The FLC and LACDC will work together to promote and participate in mutually beneficial activities such as joint meetings, sponsorships, and special events to maximize federal lab presence to connect with and benefit entrepreneurs and small businesses for greater economic development.

“Los Alamos Commerce & Development Corporation’s collaboration with the Federal Laboratory Consortium is a strategic partnership that will help advance both of our missions,” said Lauren McDaniel, interim director of LACDC. “We are excited to launch the first cohort of our New Mexico Lab-Embedded Entrepreneur Program (New Mexico LEEP) in January 2022, and envision the FLC playing a key role in establishing connections between the federal laboratories and these small businesses. The end goal here is to advance private sector growth and market adoption for the benefit of national security and the public good.”

Paul Zielinski, FLC Executive Director, noted that the MOU formalizes an evolving synergy between the two organizations. The FLC, led by Mid-Continent Regional Coordinator David Kistin of Sandia National Laboratories, has been working closely with NM LEEP in the last year. NM LEEP is one of the LACDC’s program network areas.

“Regional partners are vital to the FLC as an important part of the broader innovation ecosystem,” Zielinski said. “Working with partners like LACDC greatly expands the ability of federal labs to reach their partners and achieve common goals.”
